The Canada Southern had 22 diesel locomotives assigned to handle all of the switching and local road freight runs. Most of the through freights had US power assigned to them, though some of these through trains had Canadian units added to move them from one location to another for further assignment. With no local passenger trains left, all of the through passenger runs had US based locomotives. On any given day, there were about 24 switching tricks operated at the various yards. Though the numbers did change day to day, in 1959 there were an average of 8 switch engine tricks operated at Windsor, 3 at St.Thomas, 2 at Welland, 6 at Montrose and 5 at Victoria.
