STEEL COACHES:

Note: Some coaches were renumbered multiple times over the years. During some of these renumberings, cars from different lots may have been renumbered randomly into another series, making it difficult to cover all renumberings in this listing. I have tried to note most renumberings where most cars of a specific lot stayed together.

Most coaches had four wheel trucks, but not all. Some cars were built with six wheel trucks, while some coaches built with four wheel trucks may have had their trucks switched for six wheel trucks at some point during their service life. NYC did change trucks under passenger cars from time to time. Car number series DO NOT indicate the type of truck under a car. Within some lots - individual cars may have different trucks than those in the rest of the lot. I do not have records of when truck changes occurred under individual cars, but the 1944 records show the type of trucks under each car at that particular time. If you need to know the trucks under a specific car - email me for more info.

Note that the Branchline model is based on the later 1923-1930 cars. built, cars did not have air conditioning - many cars had a/c added later and as a result, underbody details as well as possible roof vent/air duct changes varied from car to car. Most cars had the vents removed and a few cars had a/c ducts added. In most cases, the Branchline kit is the best starting point if you wish to model these cars, but it is alway best to model cars based on actual photographs.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR HO SCALE MODELERS WANTING TO CONVERT THE BRANCHLINE COACHES TO FOUR WHEEL TRUCKS:

Most of the NYC coaches ran on four wheel trucks. Branchline released their accurate NYC coach models with six wheel trucks and many people would like to convert these with minimal effort. There is a very simple conversion when using the Walthers 933-1077 trucks. All you need is a screw driver and an X-acto knife - which you would have used building the kit anyway ! You will need to do a modification to the Walthers trucks and a modification to the body bolsters on the Branchline car. First, unscrew the Walthers 933-1077 truck sideframes from the bolster. Replace the bolster with the alternate bolster that is included in the package. Screw the trucks back together - it may be better to put the screws in from the bottom instead of the top so the screw heads do not interfere in truck swivel - this is the only modification required to the trucks. Next - simply trim the sides of the body bolsters on the Branchline car to allow the Walthers trucks to swivel properly. This does not require alot of work. I used an X-acto knife and simply trimmed/carved the sides of the bolster - trim a bit near the center of the sides and more as you work towards the ends of the bolster. Once you have enough clearance - screw the trucks onto the car using the hole centered on the body bolster instead of the offset one used for the six wheel trucks. Check coupler height - you may or may not need to shim. So far - all of my conversions have been the correct height with no further modifications required. Takes about 10 minutes per car.
