Various 3 bay hoppers from the NYC and P&LE were re-assigned to the CASO between July 1965 and April 1977. Strangely, these cars unlikely touched CASO rails during their service life as they operated from the Jones & Laughlin Steel company Adams mine at Dane, Ontario to their steel mills at Alquippa, Cleveland and Pittsburgh, Ohio via ONR-CNR-NYC-P&LE routing. The mine was sold to Dofasco in 1971 and this service ended. Remaining cars were returned to regular PC & P&LE service or scrapped with a handful remaining in CASO lettering until 1977. One oddball car that I cannot document outside of an actual photo is CASO 67229 - which appears to be a PRR H37A - photo appears on back cover of Morning Sun book PENNSYLVANIA SHORT LINES IN COLOR - VOLUME 2. Cars 69998, 71227, 901123, 906167, 906446, 906545, 906751 and 921028 assigned CONRAIL 421284-421291. |
Boxcars Car Series #138000-138299. Rebuilt in 1937 from Michigan Central lot 337-B auto boxcars and assigned NYC 138000-138299 - Lot 669-B and sub lettered CS DIV. By Canadian government order - remaining 299 cars reassigned to Canada Southern roster June 1941 to 1967 in revenue service. A few remained in work service up to the 1985 CN/CP takeover. Older wood cars were in service up until 1944. I do not have enough documentation to include them in a separate section at the moment, though lot 1019 cars were built in St. Thomas - assigned CASO 28500-28899 and were 36' cars similar to the large NYC fleet of 36' boxcars. 2 cars were rebuilt in January 1943, but quickly disappeared from the roster a few months later. |
